SXSW - Day One

I left for Austin on Tuesday, March 14th an excursion that would last almost two weeks and take me half way across the country and back. Unfortunately, I was sick before I left, so I downed some NyQuil at 9pm so I could try and get a little sleep before my 6am flight. I woke up feeling like crap, tired and groggy, but certainly excited to start the trip.

I flew into Dallas where Kelli picked me up and we immediately headed south down I35 towards Austin. The nice girl she was, she even had a Shiner waiting for me in the car. Being sick and tired, it probably wasn't the best idea to drink one, but I couldn't resist. The best part about the day was knowing that I was a mere few hours away from finally seeing Dani again, and surprising her, nonetheless. I had told her that I was staying the night in Dallas and heading down on Wednesday, but I lied. The drive was fun, Kelli and I listened to new Snow Patrol, bought Kolaches and did some shopping at the Wal-Mart in Waco. Beer, snacks and a new cowboy hat were purchased.

I arrived in Austin early in the afternoon and immediately wanted to find Dani and give her a great big hug, but I maintained will power and stuck with my original plan of surprising her at her show that night. Kelli and I went to the convention center and got our badges, then I went and helped her hang a few banners around town. I always knew Kelli was smart, but I'm now convinved she's a marketing genius.

After all that was taken care of and she checked into her hotel, we headed to El Mercado to surprise Dani. I walked into the place and looked around to try and find her. I looked everywhere and she was nowhere to be seen! That was until we both noticed each other at the same time, as I had been standing right next to where she was sitting and was just looking over her the whole time. Funny. She of course was surprised, we drank margaritas and caught up. Unfortunately Kelli had to leave, but Dani and I stuck around for a bit after she played before heading off to the final film party. We tried to drink more and have fun, but neither of us were feeling too great. Even though there were free drinks and Sleater-Kinney was playing, we decided to call it a night. I realized that I had been up for almost 24 hours, so it was a good time to go to sleep.

The Hills Have Eyes

The other night I went and saw The Hills Have Eyes with Sarah. This was by no means a fine piece of cinema, don't look for it to be nominated for any awards anytime soon. However, it was one of the scariest movies I've seen in quite some time. If you're into the classic slasher movie with things jumping out at you in an attempt to get you to jump of your seat, then this movie is for you. I'm pretty sure I saw the original, but I don't really remember it, so there will be no comparisons.
